# Track a permit

> Create and maintain a permit or license record in EntityShield.

# Track a permit

## What does this do for me?

A permit record connects a permit or license to an entity and, optionally, one of its locations. You can store its status, identifying number, dates, renewal frequency, and operational notes.

## Add a permit

1. Open **Permits** in the main application.
2. Select **Add Permit**. This action is shown only to users with permit write access.
3. Choose the entity. Choose a location if the permit applies to a specific location; otherwise leave the location unset.
4. Choose a permit type. If you choose **Other**, enter a custom type label.
5. Add the license number and choose the current status.
6. Add issue, effective, and expiration dates as available.
7. Choose a renewal frequency if one applies.
8. Mark whether a bond or insurance is required, and add notes if useful.
9. Select **Create**.

## Find or update a permit

The Permits page can search permit records, filter by status or entity, search by entity name, and group results by entity. Select a permit type in the list to open the edit form, change the fields, and select **Update**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The API computes expiration indicators when an expiration date is provided while creating or updating a permit. Keep the expiration date current so those indicators reflect the stored date.
