# Organize your collection hierarchy

> Define parent and child relationships between collections, then render breadcrumbs and sub-collections on the storefront.

# Organize your collection hierarchy

## What does this do for me?

This lets you connect related collections into a parent-child structure. The relationships are stored in collection metafields and can be shown on the storefront as breadcrumbs and sub-collection grids.

## 1. Open Collection Hierarchy

From the Home screen, select **Collection Hierarchy**. The **Collection tree** shows your collections with expand/collapse controls. Each node shows the collection title, its handle, and badges for **Has parent** and the number of children.

## 2. Edit a collection's relationships

Select **Edit** on any collection to open the **Edit Hierarchy: \{Collection}** dialog:

* Set the **Parent collection** from the dropdown, or leave it empty to make the collection a root collection.
* Enter **Children collection handles** as a comma-separated list, such as `summer-sale, new-arrivals`.

A **Breadcrumb preview** shows how the breadcrumb will read (for example, **Home / Parent / Collection**).

Select **Save hierarchy** to persist your changes. The app detects and blocks circular references, and it maintains both the parent and the inverse children links so they do not contradict each other.

## 3. Display the hierarchy on the storefront

From the **How it works** panel, add the **Breadcrumbs** or **Sub-Collections** theme blocks in the theme editor to display the hierarchy. See the theme blocks guide for how to place these app blocks.

## 4. Refresh

Use **Refresh collections** to reload the tree if your store's collections changed in Shopify.
