# Merchandising & Content Toolkit quickstart

## What the app is

Merchandising & Content Toolkit (named "Auto Merch & Content Toolkit" in Shopify) is an embedded Shopify application for collection sorting, collection hierarchy, and structured storefront content. It runs as an Express + Node.js API with a React (Shopify Polaris) admin interface, PostgreSQL via Prisma, Redis, and BullMQ background workers. Storefront features are delivered by a theme app extension.

## Sign-in model

The app is embedded in Shopify admin. Merchants authenticate through Shopify; admin API requests require a Shopify session token (App Bridge v4), and the shop is always derived from the authenticated session. Public marketing, pricing, and policy pages need no account. Health endpoints and storefront A/B and market-ranking routes are public (with token or HMAC guards where noted).

## OAuth scopes

The app requests these access scopes (from `shopify.app.toml`):

`read_metaobject_definitions`, `write_metaobject_definitions`, `read_metaobjects`, `write_metaobjects`, `read_products`, `write_products`, `read_themes`, `customer_read_metaobjects`, `unauthenticated_read_metaobjects`, `unauthenticated_read_product_listings`, `read_inventory`, `write_inventory`, `write_content`, `read_content`, `write_online_store_pages`, `read_online_store_pages`, `read_orders`

These cover collection sorting, hierarchy and content-builder metafields, theme rendering, and paid-order signals.

## Theme app extension

The app ships one theme app extension, **toolkit-renderer**, with seven storefront blocks: Breadcrumbs, Sub-Collections, Content Renderer, Recently Viewed, Smart Urgency Badges, Toolkit A/B & Tracking, and Market-aware ranking. The app proxy maps `/apps/market-ranking` to the public market-ranking endpoint.

## Where the API reference is

See the [API overview](https://docs.pcnaid.com/nodes/shopify/merchandising-content-toolkit/developer/api/index.md) for authentication, public endpoints, and the admin route reference. Webhook topics and handling are in the [webhooks reference](https://docs.pcnaid.com/nodes/shopify/merchandising-content-toolkit/developer/webhooks/index.md).

## Getting oriented as a contributor

Read the [architecture overview](https://docs.pcnaid.com/nodes/shopify/merchandising-content-toolkit/developer/architecture-overview.md) for the runtime and data flow, then use the [merchant guides](https://docs.pcnaid.com/nodes/shopify/merchandising-content-toolkit/merchant/guides/index.md) to see the workflows each admin surface supports.
