# Set Up the Storefront Age Gate

## What does this do for me?

This setup places a date-of-birth gate over the storefront. A visitor must meet the configured minimum age before the gate closes and the app remembers the pass for the configured cookie period.

## 1. Activate the theme app embed

1. Open **Age Verification** in Shopify admin.
2. On the Dashboard, select **Open the theme editor to activate the age gate**.
3. In the theme editor, enable the **Age Verification** app embed.
4. Select **Save** in the theme editor.

The app cannot read theme activation status because it does not request theme-reading access. The Dashboard link opens the correct editor location but does not claim that the embed is already active.

## 2. Configure the baseline gate

1. Open **Settings** in the app.
2. Under **General**, turn on **Enable age verification**.
3. Choose **Simple (button click)** for the baseline self-certification flow.
4. Set the **Minimum age**.
5. Edit the heading, subheading, disclaimer, and button labels if needed.
6. Under **Under-age behavior**, choose either a redirect or a block message.
7. Set how many days the verified-state cookie should last.
8. Select **Save**.

Saving publishes the minimum age to a Shopify shop metafield used by the theme extension. If that publish fails, the settings action refuses to save so the admin value and storefront threshold do not silently disagree.

## 3. Check the storefront

Open the storefront. The gate displays a date-of-birth field and the configured confirm and decline actions. A successful pass writes the `age_verified` cookie; while that cookie is live, normal visits do not reopen the gate.

To test the gate again, remove that cookie in the browser or use a browser profile that does not have it.
